Fan Wall Technology in OPTIMA Air Handling Units

HVAC Solution for a Leading Food Manufacturing Facility

One of our recent projects involved the delivery of three OPTIMA supply and exhaust air handling units for a food manufacturing plant.

Designed to serve the facility’s cooling process, each air handling unit provides an airflow capacity of 50,000 m³/h. Every unit consists of six functional sections, weighs nearly 5 tonnes, and is almost 3 metres high. The discharge openings are directed downward and protected with safety grilles.

A key feature of this project is the implementation of Fan Wall technology. The fan section was engineered in cooperation with Ziehl-Abegg Polska to deliver an airflow rate of 50,000 m³/h. Each Fan Wall assembly has a total rated output of 30 kW, comprising five EC fans rated at 6 kW each.

EC (electronically commutated) fans are becoming the preferred solution in modern HVAC systems designed to achieve maximum energy efficiency. Instead of using a single large AC fan driven by an alternating current motor, an increasing number of air handling units utilize multiple EC fans arranged in a Fan Wall configuration, providing improved performance, reliability and operational efficiency.

Benefits of Fan Wall Technology in Air Handling Units

Improved Energy Efficiency

EC fans offer significantly higher energy efficiency compared to conventional AC fan motors. In addition, multiple fans operating in parallel provide a more uniform airflow distribution throughout the air handling unit, improving overall system performance.

Reduced Noise Levels

EC fans operate more quietly than large single AC fans. By distributing the airflow across several smaller fans, the Fan Wall configuration significantly reduces overall sound levels while maintaining the required airflow performance.

Optimized Installation Space

A Fan Wall arrangement requires considerably less installation space than a single large AC fan assembly with equivalent airflow capacity, enabling more compact and flexible AHU designs.

Simplified Maintenance and Increased Operational Reliability

Smaller EC fans are easier to inspect, service and replace. In the event of a fan failure, the affected module can be replaced quickly without shutting down the entire ventilation system, minimizing downtime and improving system availability.
